As chart freaks worldwide (myself included) have been buzzing all day, I thought I should point out the record-breaking $ucce$$ both Madonna and Mariah Carey achieved on this week's singles charts. First, the one on top: Mariah Carey achieves her 18th number one single on the official US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her laid-back new single, the r&b jam "Touch My Body," precedes her forthcoming album E=MC². Its jump from 15-1 is backed up by the highest-ever debut week digital sales total of 286,000 downloads. She has now surpassed Elvis Presley's hit total, and only The Beatles have had more number one hits than she has (though, with only 20, she's likely to beat even them!). Not to be outdone in the career longevity department, Madonna has achieved a comeback of unexpected proportions. Her Hard Candy first single, "4 Minutes," zoomed up from 68-3 on this week's chart. The golden touch of Justin Timberlake and Timbaland has revived Madonna's long-missed US radio dominance, along with huge first week download sales of 217,000 copies, making this a strong contender for a return to number one for Madonna. Whether or not "4 Minutes" reaches pole position, she is now the artist with the most top ten hits ever in the US, with a ridiculously impressive total of 37. Elvis can't seem to get a break from the ladies, as even the post-Material Girl diva has beat one of his longstanding chart records (dwarfing his top ten total).
